¾ Part-time Adult Services Librarian

​

Summary: The Adult Services Librarian is responsible for the planning and operation of all services for adults.  Duties also include assisting with collection development, marketing and programming for adults.

Responsibilities:

​

Planning and Management

  • Plans, develops and recommends goals and objectives designed to fulfill the goals and objectives of the library, meet expectations of those served and maintain efficient and effective services

  • Encourages the expansion of reference services and programs consistent with community needs and library resources.

  • Consistently manages the reference services in accordance with approved library policies and procedures

  • Recommends the level of technology necessary to ensure that collection and service goals are met, including departmental technology development

Financial Management

  • Provides economic and conservative management of the Reference budget

  • Provides zero based budgeting estimates for the annual budget of the library.

  • Maintains all necessary financial records.

Collection Development

  • Provides ongoing reference collection assessment including online databases and e-resources.

  • Plans and develops multi-formatted collections to meet the informational needs of patrons in the community

  • Selects, balances, and weeds collections, with primary responsibility for reference collections.

  • Maintains awareness of current formats and trends.

Service Development

  • Plans, publicizes, schedules and provides programs for adults.

  • Provides full reference and reader’s advisory service to patrons.

  • Provides instruction to groups and individuals, both formally and informally, regarding the use of library materials, services and technology.

  • Provides circulation services to patrons when needed.

  • Provides Inter-library Loan Services for Patrons

Reporting Responsibilities

  • Accounts to the Director on all public service activities and services.

  • Compiles monthly and annual narrative and statistical reports for the Reference Room.

  • Prepares and submits other reports as requested by the Director.

Organizational relationships

  • Works directly under the Library Director and helps manage all non-professional Library staff in performing duties essential to the achievement of efficient Library operations

  • Reports to the Library Director

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Exceptional customer service skills

  • Extensive knowledge of theories, tools, and current trends in library service to adults.

  •  Extensive knowledge of personal computers and applications including electronic reference resources, software and databases.

  • Knowledge of reference materials and services.

  • Works collaboratively to plan, execute, and evaluate programs for adults.

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal communication skills, as well as effective oral and written presentation skills. 

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with all staff to achieve departmental and Library goals

  • Self-motivated and able to exercise sufficient initiative and independent judgment to perform the job satisfactorily.

  • Ability to perform satisfactorily under the stressors of the position.

  • Ability to perform the job in a reasonable time and in a manner that achieves reasonable Library performance and quality standards.

  • Ability to perform the job without disrupting the work of others.

  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds and walk up and down stairs.

 

Qualifications

Masters Degree from an ALA accredited program in library science required.

This is a fully benefited position that includes vacation and sick leave as well as medical and health benefits.  Hours include one night shift a week until 8 pm and one Saturday shift every four weeks.
